Bee Treatment

Bees, in many cases, especially here in the Southwest, have a bad reputation. All of the hype about "killer bees" has not done them any favors. The fact is, bees, africanized or not, are important pollinators of agricultural crops and fruit trees.

We could not produce the food we need to live, without them. Bees only sting in defense, because of some perceived threat. Africanized bees, or more accurately, the hybridized, part African part European honey bee, version we have here, are more defensively aggressive than other bees. They are very quick to react to any perceived threat and are also more likely to attack in large numbers than bees from Europe and Asia. Their venom is no more potent, but massive numbers of stings may introduce a lethal dose of venom. It is virtually impossible to detect the difference between africanized and non-africanized bees without careful analysis of body parts by an entomologist. Because of this, it is important to always treat a bee hive with caution and respect. Do not go to close. Keep any loud noises or vibrations to a minimum and call Premier to give you an expedient and free estimate for treatment.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU CALL:

  • If you see a tree or bush full of bees in your yard, first carefully try to see if they are just "foraging" or pollinating.
  • Bees that are foraging and do not have a queen present to protect, are not a danger to you.
  • If, however, you see a "clump" of bees all balled together, it could be a "swarm" out looking for a new home.
  • If you have bees landing and drinking out of your pool or spa, you may want to consider converting your filtration system from chorine to saline.
  • A swarm of bees in your yard is probably just resting, and in most cases, will move on within 24 hours. If it does not, call Premier.
  • If you see bees flying in and out of an opening, such as a hole in an old tree, or under the eaves of your house, call Premier.
  • Again, always be cautious around bees. Give them lots of space, avoid wearing strong perfumes, dark clothing, and avoid loud noises or vibrations, such as a lawn mower or hedge trimmer.
